Transitioning to Spring & Summer Produce

With spring just starting to appear and summer on the horizon, there is no better time to start planning your summer sales. No other department is as impacted by seasonal changes as the produce department, with this current seasonal shift being one of the most exciting times of the year for produce. While all seasonal changes are significant, it is the summer months where the heavy-hitting categories come into season in full force.

Keeping a rotating display of fresh, vibrant, tasty seasonal items featured in the department is a great way to keep customers coming back for more each week.

Summertime offers a myriad of categories to feature throughout the season. These categories tend to be high-velocity movers with excellent sales potential. Focusing on the right items at the right times and in the right space is key to seasonal success. Some key categories to focus on are stone fruit, melons, grapes, tomatoes, and berries.

  • Stone fruit: This fruit is a high-tonnage category that requires careful handling and more maintenance than others, but it is wonderful for creating colorful displays with enticing aromas. To avoid mealy or damaged fruit, do not store stone fruit between 36-42 °F.

  • Melons: These fruits are an excellent opportunity for value-added cuts to help boost sales as well as margins. They also make bigger dollar rings at the register!

  • Berries: This already leading category sells well year-round, but the summer months will bring the highest quality and best deals. Don’t be afraid to build multiple displays of berries to capitalize on consumer trends!

  • Grapes: Like berries, grapes are an excellent category to help satiate snacking with a healthy option.

  • Tomatoes: Tomatoes are great for cross-merchandising, meal solutions, and snacking displays.

These key categories offer endless opportunities for fun, impactful displays. Featuring a clean display, offering samples, and showcasing the best of the best will provide customers with endless enjoyment as they peruse the department throughout the summer months!
