The Aligned Sustainability Reporting Initiative: Supporting Climate Action and Retailers

By Madeleine Ware posted 04-21-2025 03:12 PM

Sustainability reporting is becoming increasingly complex, especially for smaller retailers. With evolving regulations, growing data demands, and shifting industry standards, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start—or how to keep up.

That’s why the Climate Collaborative, in partnership with Planet FWD and Sensiba, launched the Aligned Sustainability Reporting Initiative (ASRI) in summer 2024. ASRI is working to simplify and standardize sustainability reporting across the food and grocery industries, making it easier for companies of all sizes to track progress and share their sustainability commitments.

While many smaller, independent retailers may not be measuring their emissions, this initiative is still highly relevant. As reporting expectations evolve, ASRI provides a unique opportunity to engage with the broader industry, gain insights into best practices, and prepare for future sustainability reporting needs.

With 20 companies participating in the ASRI Working Group, we’ve already gathered valuable insights through an industry survey conducted in January 2025. By April 2025, Phase 1 will deliver a clear framework for a more efficient, standardized disclosure process, helping businesses, including independent natural food retailers, streamline reporting without adding unnecessary burdens.

Retailers are a critical part of this effort. As key players in the supply chain, your participation and engagement in sustainability reporting can help drive industry-wide improvements. Want to stay ahead of sustainability trends and be part of this effort? Join us in shaping a reporting system that works for businesses like yours.
