Sweet lovers, rejoice! June brings National Candy Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the delightful treats crafted by candy makers for over a century. Initiated by the National Confectioner’s Association (NCA), this month highlights the value and joy that candy adds to our lives.

The Origin Story of National Candy Month

Chris Gindlesperger, the senior vice president for public affairs and communications at the NCA, shared insights at the 2021 Sweets & Snacks Expo about the genesis of National Candy Month. The industry noticed a gap between major candy holidays like Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. Seeking to bridge this gap, they discovered an untapped opportunity in June.

The establishment of June as National Candy Month—roughly midway between Easter discounts and Halloween preparations—sparked a movement within the confectionary industry. From its humble beginnings, this celebration has grown, with retailers like TravelCenters of America and thousands of stores nationwide joining the festivities.

Why We Love National Candy Month

1. Indulgent delights

It's the month that satisfies our sweet cravings! Who can resist a whole month dedicated to relishing candy? Whether your preference leans towards chocolatey goodness or tangy delights, this month is your candy playground. Embrace the sweetness without worries—you can deal with cavities next month!

2. economic significance

Did you know that the candy industry contributes a whopping $35 billion to the economy and supports 55,000 jobs? Candy isn't just a treat; it's a vital economic driver! Many major American candy companies are proudly family-owned, adding a personal touch to every treat.

3. Balance and moderation

While we cherish candy, National Candy Month also encourages a balanced approach. The NCA ensures transparent labeling so consumers can make informed choices about their sugar intake. Let this month be a gentle reminder to enjoy candy responsibly—savor the sweetness while being mindful of sugar levels.

Maximizing Sales Opportunities

Retailers can capitalize on the summer months between Easter and Halloween by aligning promotions with summer celebrations and occasions. From graduations and picnics to outdoor movie nights and block parties, there are numerous opportunities to elevate candy sales and create memorable experiences for customers.

Whether it's candy popcorn at a movie night, a candy bar for special events, or inventive treats like candy nachos by a campfire, National Candy Month encourages retailers to tap into the spirit of celebration and indulgence.
